Weekly Journal 10 - November 17, 2022

Artun Çimensel

Team's progress:

From the feedback we received during our alpha presentation, we wanted to go all in to the environmental storytelling and ditch the more traditional companion narration, who tells you what to do. Michelle created a really nice animation where the area 1 boss turns a deer into a monster which we will add to our scene when the player enters as a kind of cinematic and eventually return control back to the player. Besides that Ray created some sprites for the area 2 fire map. He wanted to take a crack at designing the area 2 level layout so we'll see if he has time to work on it otherwise I think Jason will also be working on the level design. Pouria like me will work on Unity after the journal is due this week.

My contributions:

I didn't do anything major this week since I had some other assignments to catch up on. I did some minor changes/fixes to the game for this week's lab where we tried out each others games, and made some small changes afterwards and created a few different builds throughout the week. The fixes I made were:

  • Unlock the wall that blocks the boss room if the player dies so they can get back in on respawn

  • Changed the way jumping works. Now you have to hold the direction towards the wall to slide on it otherwise you fall. I also increased the Y force when wall jumping so player can jump higher. With these changes the player doesn't need two walls and can jump higher using one wall. This is something I wanted to avoid since I didn't want the player to climb to the top of the area, however testers kept finding jumping difficult the way it was so the change was made. My team likes this change more

  • Because players can jump all the way up to the top of the map using a single wall, I added colliders to the top so they can't climb out of the area

  • Created an empty Area 2 scene and set up the tilemap grid in case Ray wants to use the existing tile palette to play around with designing the new level

Reflection:

I didn't make much progress this week before the journal deadline. I am planning on making some progress before the end of the weekend. What I want to work on is the "cinematic" where the boss turns a deer into a monster before returning control to the player so they can fight. There's some minor bugs in area 1 still as well. I'd like to finish these and start focusing on Area 2 next week. There's also a critique due this weekend so I will try to finish that quickly and have time for working on the game.
